Intra Aortic Balloon Pump and Cardiac Angiogram

Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
Definition
 BALLOON
- it inflates and deflates in careful timing with certain parts of the cardiac cycle of systole and diastole

Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)

CONSOLE
- “drives” the balloon to inflate and deflate
- contains helium in a small tank which inflates the balloon
- timing of the movements is controlled in careful synch with
the rate and rhythm of the heart

Main applications

Hourly monitoring of:
: heart rate and rhythm
: record systolic/diastolic/mean arterial
pressures and diastolic augmentation
: pedal pulses distal to the catheter site
: left radial pulse
: color, temperature and capillary refill
: sensation and movement of both lower extremities
Cardiac Angiograms

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)
- a balloon tipped catheter is used to open blocked coronary vessels & resolve ischemia
- uses: angina & acute MI
- purpose: to improve blood flow within a coronary artery—compresses and “cracks” the atheroma (plaque)
